1) Quiet
Every dog should know a solid quiet command. Everybody knows that dogs barking is a nuisance, whether it's your neighbours dog, your own dog or that one that won't seem to stop howling every night down the block. Nobody wants to have to listen to it, so it's important that we make this command solid and reliable! Furthermore, it's extremely useful for dogs who have a tenancy to bark at the door when visitors (or the postman) arrive, those who like to bark at cats or even other dogs. It's one way we can start to have more control over our dog and live in a more peaceful and harmonious manner!
2) Place
A place command can be introduced so that we can ask our dogs to go over to a certain place. For many, it would be very useful to have this place as the dogs bed, but personally I like to use just a simple marker that's easy to move around. That way, we can transfer place to help us out in all sorts of situations. Whether it's asking them to get into the car, wait in another room while we have guests over, or simply because we want them to go and lie down on their beds - a solid place command can in use for many different situations.
3) Leave
A leave command could be extremely important one day and it's a vital command to have when it comes to control work. Without a good leave command, there is no way we can ask our dogs to leave things alone. Anything from strangers at the park, dogs on a walk, squirrels up a tree or the dinner plates which have been left in the kitchen! It's important that our dogs have a solid understanding of what this word means.
4) Recall
A solid recall could be the difference between life and death one day. Although that may initially sound a little dramatic, just think about the problems which could be caused when a dog with no recall runs across the road after a cat. Equally, your dog may run off after other dogs, who might not be friendly, or a small child playing with a football in the park. There are all sorts of scenarios where a recall is vital, not to mention the frustration of trying to catch a dog who won't come back!
5) Wait
Really, all dogs should know a good wait command. This can come in handy when you would like your dog to stay somewhere, or when you don't want them darting out the front door ready for their walk. We can also use this command for a variety of different tasks, such as bathing, grooming or polite manners around food and strangers! Having a good wait can be the difference between a chaotic relationship or a harmonious one!
